Four different groups of tools

Video and voice tools fall into four groups. Video editors such as CapCut and Descript help you edit footage you've shot yourself. Voice tools such as ElevenLabs turn text into speech. Avatar tools such as Synthesia and HeyGen make a video in which a digital presenter speaks. Music tools such as Suno compose an entire song. The right choice depends on what you're making. Who should choose what?

You make social videos on your phone: CapCut

CapCut is the easiest way to make short vertical videos for Instagram, TikTok or Facebook. It adds automatic captions and music and tidies up the picture. Always read Finnish captions through before posting. Note that it's owned by TikTok's parent company, and its terms give the company broad rights to uploaded content.

You make podcasts or training recordings: Descript

In Descript you edit video by deleting words from the transcript. It removes filler words and long pauses automatically and improves audio quality. It works brilliantly in English, but Finnish speech recognition needs more correcting.

You need a voice-over: ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs turns written text into very natural-sounding speech, Finnish included, although pronunciation may have small errors. It suits product videos, online course narration and even a business voicemail greeting.

You make onboarding or how-to videos without filming: Synthesia or HeyGen

In both, you write a script and a digital presenter speaks it on video. Synthesia is aimed especially at corporate training videos and has strict usage rules. HeyGen is popular in marketing and can translate your own video into another language with lip movements matched to the new language.

You want a song for a party: Suno

Suno creates a full song with lyrics and instruments in seconds. It's a fun way to make a birthday song or a memorable gift. Songs from the free version can't be used commercially.

Tip: Write your script or lyrics first with an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude, then bring the finished text into the video or voice tool. The result is usually much better than letting the tool invent everything.

Your voice and face are personal data

Voice cloning and avatars are powerful, but they come with responsibility. You may not use someone else's voice or face without permission, and a clone of your own voice is stored on the service's servers. If you make an avatar of yourself, read the terms and find out how your data is deleted if you stop using the service. Label AI-made videos clearly, as the EU AI Act increasingly requires AI content to be marked.

Watch out: The same technology is used in scams. A fraudster can call using a loved one's voice and urgently ask for money. Agree on a code word with your family and always call back on a number you know. Read more in our guide to AI scams.

What do they cost?

All of these tools have a free or limited trial version, but regular use usually needs a subscription, typically around โ‚ฌ5โ€“30 a month. Free versions often add a watermark or have a tight quota. Prices change often, so check each service's own site.

How to get started

Pick one small project, such as a one-minute introduction video for your business or your club's event. Film it on your phone, edit it in CapCut and add captions. If you'd rather not appear yourself, write a short text and let ElevenLabs read it. Once the first video is done, you'll notice which step took longest and can choose your next tool for exactly that. Keep things simple at first: clear sound and good lighting often matter more than fancy effects.
